Project Overview

An investigation of sustainability needs in laundry for the European market, which alongside the development of other innovation concepts, led to an in-depth investigation into countering micro-fibre pollution.

The project contributed to the introduction of a new, downloadable washing machine cycle, a washing machine developed in partnership with Patagonia, and an external, retrofit microfiber filter.

Less Microfibre Cycle

The new “Less Microfiber” cycle, which anyone with a Samsung washer can download as an update for their machine, can reduce microfiber pollution by as much as 54%. This is achieved through a less abrasive motion of the drum.

This cycle comes preinstalled on the Samsung Series 8 washing machine which was launched in partnership with Patagonia.

External Filter

About 15% of the microplastics polluting our oceans can be traced back to synthetic fabrics. In washing machines, microfibers shed off of polyester and other clothing materials, then head to wastewater treatment facilities and, eventually, the sea.

The filter has been designed to counter this problem, while making it very simple for the average consumer to deal with through a streamlined user experience.
