360º Lidar 3D Scanner

3D scanning is widely used throughout a variety of industries, but such devices come with a very high price tag. The goal of this project was to build a low cost system, which in the end came down to under $ 100. The design, assembly and testing took about two weekends working in my spare time.

As the aim of this project was simply to experiment with Lidar, there are in fact many potential applications for a low cost scanner in the real-estate and interior design industries, for the building of low cost, dimensionally accurate reference models.

180º Room Scan

Below is a panoramic photo of the space scanned. The scanner was standing on the floor in the center of the room. The following images depict the 3D point cloud with some overlaid images of the room. The Images do not fit perfectly as they are 2D, being overlaid onto a 3D snow globe type represent

Scan Features

The scan is performed from the floor, so the scanner is blind to surfaces like the top of the bed or the area behind the left cupboard. This can be observed in the model when it is rotated. All features are visible: walls, cupboards, bed, door, and especially the slanted ceiling, can all be identified in the scan.
